The Sweat Science stands out to many of its clients because for us, technique is critical. From the moment you first step foot into the studio to the time you leave, you’ll feel like maybe, just maybe, you could actually learn how to box. At some point or another, we’ve all felt this excitement.

But each of us have come to a place in our own journey where we want the next level too. And that’s the second way TSS stands out. Rather than just showing up to a nightclub scene with punching bags, we are determined to see you box with intent. We aren’t here just to see you figure out how to get through a good sweat in a hit-fit class – although that does make us so proud.

Honestly, we’re not going to be fully satisfied until we know we’ve elevated you to the top. The very top.

As coaches, we’ve watched each of you come in totally green to the sport, but slowly start killing it as time went on. It has become more than just fitness to you, and we see that. We take note of the first time you throw a punch and remember to move your head or feet, and we see this insane potential in you.

When we try something new, we’re fully engaged. The thrill and fear of that learning process is exhilarating. But once something starts to feel comfortable, we need to disrupt that routine by continuing to cycle in new stuff. Thankfully in boxing, there is always something new to learn.

So, what’s next?

We have a few things here at the studio specifically designed to help you increase your boxing skills and attain those personal fitness goals. Things that our instructors are going to be looking out for and encouraging our TSS troop members with in 2018. Because seriously, boxing is just as much a journey as your fitness goals, requiring you to be on top of your game. That is, unless, you like feeling stagnant? Nah, us either.

Here are a few ways you can up your game here at The Sweat Science:

It’s one thing to show up to a class and do what you’re told, but like we said, we want you to be intentional. Before you show up, decide on one thing you’re going to pay special attention to during your class. Maybe you’ve noticed your uppercuts need some TLC or you could really work on head movement following a killer cross. Promise yourself that you’ll take the time to be intentional with your technique, and don’t be shy to let your class coach know what your goal is for the day.

By getting picky in your classes, you’re already on your way to reaching the next level of boxing. Aside from it being crucial to avoiding injury, having the right technique will challenge your body in a totally different way, resulting in a better workout.

Personal training doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go professional, but it really is the best way to up your game. Obviously one-on-one training allows the TSS coaches to evaluate where you are presently so you can start improving your skill set. The coaches get to be meticulous in their evaluation, which can help to resolve any problem areas you’re experiencing or concerns you might have. It also so happens to be an unbelievable workout.

The best part is that you can choose what will work best for you. Maybe you’ll want to start with a 30-minute pad lesson, and work your way up to a full one-hour session. You can choose if you want to come once a month, or once a week for these private lessons too. This flexibility works well and helps you get to the next level, even during your hit-fit classes.

More and more, we’re seeing beginner boxers sign up to train for their first ammature fight. This is incredibly rewarding for us to see as a team, and we think this is just the beginning for our troops. It could be intimidating to think about getting in the ring, but that shouldn’t stop anyone from giving it a shot.

Of course this type of training is more intensive, but the results include more confidence, expert level technique and getting even more fit. And, what could be more exhilarating than the thought of a ‘W’ in the ring after such hard work and dedication?

We can’t believe in just one short year, we’ve seen so much progress with our troops. But it’s time now to step it up. Let’s get busier than ever, proving ourselves just how capable we are by being intentional with our time in the studio. Let’s be proud of where we’ve come from, and a little unsatisfied until we reach the top. The very top.

We want to see some new faces in the studio, and are offering a special intro offer for you! For the month of February you can get one month of unlimited classes.

We don’t know about you, but the holidays snuck up on us like a monster; making a maniac out of our eating habits and nearly drowning our ability to get into the studio for a HitFit class.

We get it. The holidays are busy – in fact, they can be downright exhausting. By the time we’ve visited with the family, clinked glasses with friends and caught up on all the dishes, getting into The Sweat Science for a class or private lesson can be nearly impossible.

But as the New Year approached and everyone set their resolutions, we want to encourage you: no matter how long you’ve been away, getting back into it is so much easier than you can imagine.

See, our bodies are equipped with something called muscle memory – a habit built over time that our body remembers physiologically. If you’ve ever been in a class at TSS, you’ve heard at least one instructor talk about building up muscle memory while we strategically repeat the movements of our jab, cross, hooks and uppercuts.

That’s because the trainers know the lifelong benefits of muscle memory are powerful. And here’s why:

One study suggests that after consistently training muscles – even after a three-month hiatus from those strength training activities – those who had previously built up muscle would be able to return to their activities more easily, and see more muscle gain quicker. A lot quicker. So when you feel like maybe it’s been too long, trust your body. It already knows exactly what to do.

Building up muscle memory is a huge part of the success you’ll find at TSS. We don’t like to hear about people getting injured, but the fact is, we’ve seen many people come into our studio with previous injury because they haven’t been properly taught how to throw a punch. Relearning how to box is vital at this point.*

When you walk into a class or private lesson at TSS, you will first learn the proper technique. Then, you’re in charge of committing those lessons to memory: muscle memory. We want you to take the time to do this well because less injury means more progress and ultimately more personal success with your fitness goals.

Of course our coaches are here to help too, so ask us questions if you’re concerned about your technique.

As we age, our body’s ability to gain and retain muscle becomes more and more difficult. However, studies show that by building muscle while we’re able, our body retains it as we age. This is a huge factor to living a long and healthy life, and has been proven to reduce health risks.

So before you look at coming back to the studio after the holidays as a big hurdle, we’re going to remind you one more time: thanks to muscle memory, your body already knows exactly what to do. So pack your wraps and a water bottle and book your class now. We can’t wait to see you here.

*If you feel you could brush up on your technique, we really want you to consider taking a private lesson with your favourite trainer. Your first session is only $45, and you can choose either 30-minute or 60-minute sessions at a time!

It’s pretty clear that we believe participating in sports isn’t just important, it’s vital. One year ago now we opened the doors to The Sweat Science, inviting anyone interested to learn how to box. But during the last year, something even better has happened: you created a team where everyone fits, everyone belongs, and everyone is challenged to being the very best version of themselves.

Unfortunately, this isn’t the case for so many people in our community, especially children.

Did you know that one in every three Canadian children can’t participate in organized sport because it’s too expensive? In 2014, CIBC commissioned a study which revealed parents spend an average of $953 per year to get involved in a sport.

That’s a big cost many Canadians can’t afford on their own, which is why we’re going to celebrate our birthday by giving back and starting a new class just for kids. (We’ll tell you all about it below!)

Other than the obvious physical activity benefits, here’s what happens when a child joins a sports team:

There are so many ways kids could spend their time. Being part of an organized sport, children make new friends and learn how to contribute to a team so everyone wins.

Growing up is hard to do!  But when a child finds a sport they enjoy, it naturally builds self-esteem and confidence. Sports challenge us to doing tough stuff, and when we accomplish those challenges, it builds us up and spills over into the rest of our life.

In a technology age where so much of children’s time could be spent by themselves on iPads or smart phones, becoming part of a team engages kids in their very own experience sharing and celebrating culture.
“It helped me lose weight, it helped me gain confidence, and boosted my self-esteem,” Eldrine Soriano says, who has been supported by KidSport for 20 years. "It helped me control my aggression, and learn discipline."

We’re so excited to announce our first ever kids classes starting November 13th. The 10-week boxing program is tailored for kids ages 8 – 15 and will focus on boxing basics. Giving them a platform to develop their skill set in a fun and safe environment, they’ll learn balance, coordination, boxing technique and discipline. For more info or enrolment, contact us at info@thesweatscience.com

We’re floored that becoming part of a team can make such a huge difference for one person, so we’re partnering with KidSport to celebrate our birthday, sport, and the power of a good team.

KidSport started back in 1993, and has helped remove financial barriers that would have otherwise kept over 530,000 kids from getting involved in organized sports. They confidentially provide financial support for registration fees and equipment costs, removing barriers that should never hold a kid back from getting in the game.

We would love for you to join us Friday November 10th for our first annual Punch Drunk Ball. We’re going big, celebrating our first birthday with the TSS troops, all while giving back to this charity we are so passionate about. Check out the invite below for all the information, because it simply won’t be a celebration without you.

So bring your wallet, and we’ll get your first drink. Let’s make it possible for more kids to find their very own troops where everyone fits, everyone belongs, and everyone is challenged to being the very best version of themselves.

boxing ang yoga_copy

Listen up. We know you want to get into the studio and smash that heavy bag with all you’ve got. And we love that about you. But what if we told you that when you skip recovery, you’re actually hindering your potential.

Recovery is something we don’t talk about enough, even though it is a key component to reaching your fitness goals. Recovery happens after your killer HIT-FIT class, and before you rest (sleep, hydrate, eat well, etc.). See, recovery is what you actively do to help your body maximize the time it takes to repair after a wicked workout.

We’ve found three major reasons why recovery is just as important as hitting that heavy bag. We’ve listed them here for you to check out before you read about our new Boxing + Yoga class to help you become just as amazing at recovery as you are at boxing.

You already look banging, but taking time to intentionally stretch will actually change the way you look. It’s cute if you stretch for two minutes in your bed every morning, but that won’t cut it. See, when you’re boxing, you’re training your muscles to breakdown and adapt to handle an increased workload, building muscle as a result. Smart recovery helps to rebuild those muscles more easily, and can even change your physical appearance quicker.

Any kind of physical activity releases that feel good hormone – endorphins. But while you are boxing, your body actually tenses up, and needs recovery to enhance your results. To combat any physiological stress built up in life or during your HIT-FIT class, stretching will release tension, help to resolve any joint pain, and restore your senses mentally.

When you don’t consider recovery than you’re selling yourself short; even coming short of your goals without intending to. After recovery, your mind is motivated and your body is actually prepared for the next level.

Because we care about your total health and fitness journey, we’ve started a new class at The Sweat Science; Boxing + Yoga. Every Friday, at 5:30 we will have a 60 minute class that will start with 30 minutes of high intensity boxing in our heavy bag studio, followed by 30 minutes of yoga poses that include strength, balance and toning. Of course we’ve got you covered with some ab work and cool down before the class finishes with stretches intentionally designed to help you as a boxer.

Check out the schedule to see when our next Boxing + Yoga class is happening, and become just as badass at recovery as you are boxing.

army of strong women-3

We’ve heard countless stories of women who come into the studio for the first time, feeling equal parts anticipation and fear. And, we get it! Once upon a time, we were all there too.

But then we took off our shoes and fumbled around putting on our hand wraps while listening to the buzz of people around us. We stepped into the heavy bag studio and let our heart beat as loud as the Drake song playing in the background while a trainer took us through our stance and six punches.

We didn’t know what we were doing. We honestly had no clue!

We hoped no one was looking, and laughed quietly when we accidentally hit ourselves in the nose or knocked out the wrong combination. But we did it because we heard how amazing boxing is as a holistic workout, and we weren’t about to continue missing out on something with so much potential, even if the concept seemed so different from anything we’d ever done before.

It all made sense the moment our gloves hit that bag. See, the second you hear that snap, you make one of the most important mental connections we believe you need to know: you’re strong.

We’re the army of strong women at The Sweat Science, and while we’re all on our own fitness journey, we’re committed to attaining goals as an ever-growing girl gang. Whether you’re just about to start your fitness journey or you’re looking to start something new, we wanted to let you know about some of the amazing benefits of boxing.

Here are a few of the reasons Calgary’s ladies are hooked on boxing at The Sweat Science:

1. We’ve all heard that exercise triggers the release of the feel-good hormone – endorphins – and boxing is certainly not exempt! Whether you start or finish your day with boxing, you can be sure hitting a heavy bag will make you feel good.

2. Boxing classes at TSS are 50-minutes long, with 16 three-minute rounds of the ultimate in high intensity interval training. Obviously, this total body workout has a hugely positive impact on cardiovascular health, including the reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, reduced blood pressure and reduced risk of stroke. Not to mention, you won’t sweat anywhere else as good as this.

3. People will often talk about how boxing is like a dance, and if you’ve been boxing, you know how true this is. This sport is amazing for building hand-eye-foot coordination, and sharpens your mind as much as it chisels your abs.

As you can see, boxing is holistic. It’s this reason why women are getting hooked on the sport as their fitness outlet, and the camaraderie at TSS makes it so easy to stay.

So go ahead; walk through the doors of the studio equal parts anticipation and fear. We’ll be there too and can guarantee you’ll leave the studio sweaty, inducted into the ever-growing girl gang, and most importantly, you’ll leave knowing the most important thing we think you need know: girl, you’re so strong.

Boxers are taught when throwing punches to rotate there fists inward just before impact... This is a very important part of proper punching technique, here are few reasons why.

1. Wrist and elbow protection: Turning your fist over places your wrist in a position that is able to endure more force and prevents the hyperextension of your elbow. This will Allow you to hit harder without injuring your elbow or wrist.

2. Increased Reach: Rotating your hand starts a chain reaction that incorporates your shoulder and core into the punch making you more stable allowing you to throw further without falling off balance

3. Punching power:  The rotation of your fists invites your entire upper body into the punch allowing you to land with much more force

4. Defence:  this rotation leads to your shoulder rotating up and towards your chin, keeping it protected from counter punches when exchanging

This month at The Sweat Science we are going to be focusing on boxing stance fundamentals.

Here are a couple reasons why it's a good idea to fully develop your boxing stance and some of the benefits you will notice when you do.

A proper boxing stance will......

- Give you power in each hand but still allow you to efficiently defend yourself from counter punches

- Give you good range with both hands while not making you vulnerable by reaching with your punches, forcing you off balance

- Allow you to throw a variety of punches from a balanced position without leaving you exposed

- Give you the ability to switch between offensive and defensive movement at any given time without getting tripped up or falling off balance

Calgarians know that winter can be a real drag. Between scraping snow off your car in -20 weather, dealing with unpredictable cold snaps, and trudging through icy blizzards, the winter months seem to last an eternity here in Cow Town. Fortunately, The Calgary Herald recently came to the rescue with their guide to "winterizing" yourself with a variety of activities - including recommending visiting the Sweat Science Boxing Studio!

According to the Calgary Herald:

Dustin Sutley knows a thing or two about throwing a punch; he knocked out his first four professional opponents. Now he’s applying his knowledge and experience to whipping Calgarians into shape. When it opens later this year, the Sweat Science, his modern take on an “Ali era” facility, will have two training areas: the heavy-bag studio, where the 30-person Hit-Fit classes will be held, and the Ringside Studio for smaller classes and private sessions.

In the meantime, why not beat the winter blues and warm up with our one our 50-min classes. Book your bag today.

Here's what they had to say about us:

Hook, jab, uppercut — you'll learn how to do it all at The Sweat Science, a 3,000-square-foot, non-contact boxing studio owned by a professional boxer that recently opened in Inglewood. The Sweat Science offers group classes set to music in its heavy bag studio with 30 custom-made bags, and smaller classes for six in its Ringside classroom, which features a 12-foot boxing ring, speed bags and other boxing equipment. Private training is also available.
